Rhode doesn't take well to betrayal.
She doesn't remember everything about that night, thirty-five years ago, when her idea of her perfect Family was destroyed-- but she does remember the heartwrenching feeling of watching someone she loved betray them all, smiling softly as he destroyed everything she had ever known.
Kuroro is a conflict for her. She enjoys his company; she loves the way he spoils her, indulges her whims. She even feels safe around him, though she knows it is a dangerous security to have. There is always the fear that he will lose interest, and decide she would be more entertaining with the blade of an Exorcist through her skull. God knows the nightmares she has had about it, though sometimes she sees Kuroro's silhouette replaced with the thinner frame of someone she has never forgotten.
Dying is such a strange fear, but it consumes her in the dark of night. She jerks awake, hearing small noises and expecting to find one of her enemies standing over her bed. She curls up around her pillow, closing her eyes and trying to ignore the nagging voice in her imagination that turns the noise of the wind outside into the sound of someone breathing in the blackness that surrounds her bed. If they came, if she screamed, would he hear? Would anyone help her, if they dragged her out and slaughtered her in the hallway?
Every time Kuroro hugs her, or she gets too comfortable in his lap, she forces herself to think of that night, and the first day she arrived in this place. She can't die in a place like this; not when her Family is still at home, waiting for her and needing her. And even when she falls asleep with her head on his lap, or smiles at an affectionate little kiss on the head, she feels a distant twist of fear.
This man could be the death of her. He could betray her, or abandon her, and she would be completely vulnerable in a strange, terrifying world. Perhaps, someday, he will even kill her with his own hands.
No matter how he betrays her, it will never hurt as badly as her first betrayal-- the betrayal.
All the same, Rhode has a strange, chilling dread that someday her nightmares will become reality.
