“I don’t want to be alone.”
There was a pause in that moment, a fevered shudder wracking her thin frame as her hands gripped the sheets weakly. A labored wheeze, two soft lines of dampness escaping her eyes as she tried to regain her control.
He reached out gently, a soft touch brushing the hair from her face. She was burning up, trying her best to act as though nothing was wrong.
As though she wasn’t dying.
She caught his hand , closing her eyes and pressing the cool skin against her cheek. It felt nice, something so cold… Like lying against cool stone on a hot day. “I don’t want to be alone… When it ends.”
A strange silence passed, a thoughtful moment for the man seated on the edge of the bed. Realization, at last- She knew.
“Please don’t leave me alone in the dark.”
“Please.”
Perhaps it was madness, but there wasn’t any sense of insanity in the sharp blue eyes. There were at least several days before it would set in, at the least.
She was asking the one who was killing her to help her. She knew she was dying… And she had the courage to admit it, if only once.
If only to confess her fear.
He exhaled softly, speaking softly as though passing on a secret.
“You won’t be alone. I’ll be with you.” She released a shaky breath, opening her eyes to watch his expression for any sign of betrayal.
“No matter what…?”
He moved his hand from her cheek carefully, running it over her hair with a sense of delicate treatment reserved for broken dolls and precious toys.
“I promise. I won’t let you be alone.”
“That’s good…” She smiled, at last. That same cocky smile, so like the one that didn’t have the taint of illness and death. “Don’t sound so serious, now. It’s not like you’re winning this.”
“Of course.” What else was there to say? He had won already. The only thing remaining was to wait and watch the results of this victory, and to help the end along until it was his alone.
