It was not until her small, bloodied body was in his arms that he realized how cold the forest had become.
This passing revelation was found in comparison more than in casual observation; the last time he had been on his knees in such a manner, he had held his own daughter, watched the life drain from her corpse as the soldiers scattered and he screamed for mercy upon his family.
Mercy had not come.
The man who had wandered for the past two thousand years had a long-forgotten weight in his stomach as he rose to his feet, looking around the decimated landscape. The front of his shirt was stained with red, even through his this waistcoat and jacket, but the blossoming red on his own attire was nothing compared to the gore on his ward’s clothing.
An immortal child was dying in his arms, and for the first time in centuries he did not know what to do.
She moved and said his name, a breath of choked air and pain that carried that single word far too well.
“Duke…”
The wind cut off the name, burning his cheeks with icy air. For a moment, he closed his eyes, finding the level thinking that had abandoned him for too long.
“A moment, Rhode.”
It seemed the forest was a desert, for a passing moment, and the hair upon his neck stood on end.
Nevermore.
The Ark’s entry shivered into existence, allowing its masters to pass before disappearing in a ripple of air.
