The cobblestone streets of Death City were slick with the rain that had been falling for the past few days, small rivers forming in the gutters and forming waterfalls on the steps between each street level. Joshua was managing to keep a firm grip on the umbrella, taking care to keep Rhode and himself underneath it as she watched her footing.
"I hate the weather here. Either it's ridiculously hot and we can't do anything, or it's some other extreme that is just as useless."
Josh seemed to be ignoring his companion's whining, but it wasn't very effective at deterring her.
"My socks and shoes are absolutely soaked. This pastry box is going to be damp, and it'll spoil everything inside. And when the rain stops, everything will be a muddy mess."
"Oh, stop whining," he said, tone rather condescending as always. "It's just a little rain. You're not going to melt."
She shot him a nasty look, ready to repossess the umbrella and leave him to get soaked. He was expecting the grab, however, and didn't let go. It only took a few tugs before things began to escalate, and within a matter of seconds they were practically wrestling for the poor parasol.
Joshua had the advantage of size and strength, barely, but Rhode's cheating also gave her something of an upper hand. The wet conditions, however, made an easy victory difficult for either of them. Finally, Rhode twisted the umbrella until Josh was forced to release it. Jumping back, she let out a victorious shout, grinning-- and slipping. He grabbed her arm before she could fall, pulling her up to slightly drier ground.
Rather put out at being handled so roughly, Rhode brushed down the front of her skirt, frowning.
"I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself, you kn--" He waited until she was looking up to shoot him a glare before silencing her with a kiss.
She was nothing short of shocked when it happened. Intentionally or otherwise, her back was to a wall, so she couldn't run off; she was still holding the umbrella, but she wasn't really thinking about that. By the time she'd remembered, they were drenched by the downpour, and his odd, milk-colored hair was sticking to her cheeks., and her eyelashes were gathering droplets.
It felt like an eternity before he drew back-- nipping at her lip, the nerve-- smiling at her surprise, and the blush rising in her cheeks. Reaching down, he grabbed the wrist she was holding the umbrella with, adjusting it so she was shielded from getting any wetter.
"Careful, now. You'll catch a cold."
Speechless, she simply stood there, still attempting to reason with the taste of coffee cake that lingered on her tongue. By the time she managed to bring a hand to her mouth, fingers brushing her still-smarting lip, he was disappearing up the stairs toward the Communal.
